STATUE OF THE MADONNA WITH CHILD
Sculptural group depicting the seated Virgin supporting the blessing Child on her left knee. In his right hand he holds a grain between thumb and forefinger; the Child has an apple in his left hand. They are both wearing golden robes.
The sculpture translates the characteristics of Gothic statuary into a provincial language, not lacking in finesse, as emerges from the facial typology, while the quality of the drapery, with its wide folds, leads us to a date referable to the first half of the fifteenth century .
The Virgin of S. Maria delle Grazie certainly represents one of the most valuable examples of that group of Molise Madonnas executed by local artists in contact with the Abruzzo area and dated to the second half of the fourteenth century. The gilding of the clothes dates back to the eighteenth century , the eyes are in glass paste and the crown has been resected to allow the insertion of metal crowns. It has close affinities with the Virgin of S. Marco in Agnone.
